How to get more customers for a service business

The short answer
Most service businesses get more customers by fixing five things in this order: be easy to find on Google, Maps and AI assistants; make your website turn visitors into calls; answer every enquiry within minutes; turn happy customers into reviews and repeat bookings; then add paid ads to multiply what already works. Ads come last because they amplify everything before them, good or bad.
Start where your customers already look
Before you spend anything, write down how your last twenty customers found you. For most local businesses the answer is a mix of Google search, Google Maps, referrals and social media. More and more people now also ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews who to call.
That list tells you where the next customers are coming from. Growth is usually about showing up better in places people already search, not finding a brand new channel.
Step 1: Be easy to find
Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a customer sees, before your website. Make it complete and accurate:
- Choose the most accurate primary category, then add secondary categories for other services.
- List every service, your real service area and your hours, including holiday hours.
- Add fresh photos of real jobs, your team and your vehicles or premises.
- Keep your name, address and phone number identical everywhere online.
Then give your website one clear page per service, written the way customers ask questions. Our guide to ranking in the Google map pack covers this in detail.
Step 2: Make your website do one job
A service business website has one job: turn a visitor into a call, a message or a booking. Everything else is secondary.
- Put your phone number and a booking button at the top of every page, especially on mobile.
- Say what you do, where you do it and why people choose you in the first screen.
- Show proof close to the button: reviews, photos of real work, results.
- Keep it fast. Most of your visitors are on a phone, often on mobile data.
Saif Homes, a realtor in Northern Virginia, signed a $46,000 USD lease two months after a new site built this way went live, before running any ads.
Step 3: Answer every enquiry within minutes
People rarely contact just one business. They call or message two or three, and the first one to reply helpfully usually gets the job. If you are on a roof, with a patient or driving, you cannot always pick up.
The fix is simple automation: a text that goes out the moment a call is missed, an instant reply on web chat, WhatsApp and forms, and a link so people can book a time themselves. Read how to answer every lead when you are too busy to pick up.
Step 4: Turn customers into reviews and repeat visits
Every finished job is a chance to earn a review and a future booking. Ask for the review by text right after the job, with a direct link. Send a friendly reminder when it is time for the next service, whether that is a cleaning, an inspection or a seasonal check. Our guide to getting more Google reviews includes a message you can copy.
Step 5: Add paid ads to scale
Once the steps above are working, paid ads multiply the result. Google search ads reach people who need you right now. Meta, Instagram and TikTok ads put your work in front of people who will need you soon. See how to run paid ads for a service business and Google Ads vs Meta ads.
ClearView Cleaning Services in Qatar went from 22 to 74 WhatsApp enquiries, and cost per enquiry fell from $73 to $22, without spending more on ads, once tracking and follow-up were fixed.
Measure what actually matters
Clicks, likes and impressions feel good but do not pay the bills. Track three numbers every month: enquiries, booked jobs and cost per booked job. If those are rising, you are growing.
