How to rank in the Google map pack

The short answer
Google ranks map pack results on three things it names publicly: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot move your location, but you can improve relevance and prominence: a complete Google Business Profile with the right primary category and services, a steady flow of genuine reviews with replies, a website with a page for each service and area, consistent business details across the web, and mentions or links from other local sites.
How the map pack works
The map pack is the box of three businesses with a map that appears for searches like "dentist near me". Google says local results are based mainly on relevance (how well your profile matches the search), distance (how far you are from the searcher) and prominence (how well known and trusted your business is, online and off).
1. Complete your Google Business Profile
- Pick the most specific accurate primary category. This is the single biggest relevance signal you control.
- Add secondary categories, every service you offer, and your service area.
- Write a clear description of what you do and who you help, without keyword stuffing.
- Upload real photos regularly and keep hours, including holiday hours, accurate.
- Use your real business name. Adding keywords to it breaks Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended.
2. Earn reviews steadily
Reviews feed prominence. A steady stream of genuine reviews beats a burst followed by silence, and replying to every review shows you are active and care. See how to get more Google reviews.
3. Build a page for every service
Your website should have a dedicated page for each main service, mentioning the areas you serve naturally. Link your Google Business Profile to the most relevant page. This helps Google understand exactly what you do and where.
4. Keep your details identical everywhere
Your business name, address and phone number should match across your website, Google, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Facebook, Yelp and industry directories. Inconsistent details make it harder for Google, and for AI assistants, to trust which information is correct.
5. Get mentioned locally
Local sponsorships, chamber of commerce listings, supplier pages, local news and partner businesses can all mention and link to you. These add prominence that is hard for competitors to copy.
How long it takes
Profile fixes can help within weeks. Most businesses see rankings compound over 60 to 90 days of steady work. Anyone who guarantees the number one spot is not being honest: Google decides rankings, and distance alone changes results from one street to the next.
